AARP Foundation Experience Corps is a volunteer-based tutoring program that connects older adults to their communities by engaging them in the intergenerational work of helping young students become better readers. The program helps older adult volunteers maintain a sense of purpose by putting their wisdom to work, at the same time addressing a major contributor to poverty: the inability of children to read at grade level by the end of third grade.

ECBA uses a pre and post tutoring assessment, which is completed by teachers and site coordinators for each student who received the sustained tutoring session. The surveys are done at the beginning of each school year and at the end of the school year. The surveys asks about the overall performance of students served by the sustained strategy. All teachers and or site supervisor who have an EC tutor in their classroom are asked to complete a survey on EC tutor knowledge and skills as well as the influence it has had on student reading performance and engagement behaviors.
