Jumpstart for Young Children, Inc.

Jumpstart provides language, literacy, and social-emotional programming for preschool children from underserved communities and promotes quality early learning for all, envisioning a day when every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. Jumpstart recruits and trains college student volunteers, known as Jumpstart Corps Members, to deliver its research-based, intentionally designed language and literacy curriculum to children from underserved communities across the country. Jumpstart’s program helps preschool children develop the key language, literacy, and social-emotional skills deemed by early education experts to be vital for school readiness and third grade reading proficiency, while also enabling members to hone their own professional skills, preparing them to be future early childhood educators and champions.

Jumpstart's five core values are: Determination, Connection, Kindness, Learning, and Joy.
Jumpstart assesses children’s language and literacy gains using the Test of Preschool Early Literacy (TOPEL). The TOPEL is a standardized, norm-referenced measure of early language and literacy skills for children age 3-5 years that is widely used in intervention research. Jumpstart also evaluates Corps Member impact by administering the Jumpstart Corps Member Survey two times a year: before pre-service training in the fall and at post-service. The surveys collect information about Corps Members’ demographic and academic backgrounds, future career and advanced degree plans, knowledge of early childhood best practices, workforce skills obtained, and satisfaction with the Jumpstart program.
